Back To The Basics

They say to become a master of anything, at least once a year you have to go Back To The Basics and start from the beginning. And that is exactly what Calgary Model Brittany Tamara and myself do. We cut out all the fancy stuff and head out for a shoot with only a camera, a flash and the simplest of locations and see what we can collaborate on and come up with. This one is one of my favorites.

In this set we wanted to show what it might be like to be out on a date with Brittany. This was actually a fairly challenging shoot because we were in close proximity of each other which definitely meant the flash could easily blow things out, which it did on occasion. We are actually planning on an even tighter location to make things interesting. Word to the wise if you are doing something like this, it is critically important that the photographer and model have trust in each other. I would NOT have done this like this with any model other than Brittany. One of the toughest parts was keeping my shadow under control.

I also love the above image because I think it really captures the flavor of the shoot. One of the things I am really working on is noise. No not getting rid of it, but adding more. I personally love the more grainy and noise images the best along with some shadows. It is kind of ironic because I still remember someone telling me that I love high key shots the most and a model telling me shadows are bad. Perhaps, but I like them. Of course, it was at a time when I was learning to control things. I think photographers have to attempt to get rid of all shadows first when they are learning so you get a flat lifeless image and then work on bringing them back into the image in a controlled way.

The above image actually shocked me! Of course it proves what a dumbass I really am. Shocking in that Britt has a tattoo on the back of her leg. lol I never really noticed it before. I do think that it is HOT though. I wonder how many others she has that I have never really noticed. Go figure.

I really think the going Back To The Basics is important for photographers and models in order to be truly creative. Give it a try sometime.
